THE STORY

After 25 years in a wheelchair, John had become one of the most accomplished wheelchair athletes in the world: he was the first wheelchair athlete to complete the Ironman World Championship, the first non-American inducted into the event’s Hall of Fame, and the first paraplegic to swim the English Channel.

And yet, John longed for one more victory: to walk on the beach with his wife holding her hand. In 2013 John began to access his full potential by retraining his mind and body, and, through intense focus and determination, stand, walk, and fulfil his dream.

How Far Can You Go? is his amazing story. It tells the story not only the physical aspects of John’s journey, but also the mental fortitude to push through the impossible.

I’ve had a lot of change in my life since the accident that led to my paraplegia over 30 years ago. And although I wasn’t completely aware of it at the time, I can now look back to where it all began and see that I’ve developed a methodology for managing change that has helped me conquer the challenges I’ve been drawn to throughout my life.

I believe that in this time of fear and disruption, when so many of us are facing an uncertain and turbulent future, my methodology could help you to embrace the new. Many of us have internal conversations, discussions with ourselves, constantly throughout each day. These conversations can sometimes be counterproductive and limit our ability to move forward.

I hope the insights I’ve gathered in this book will help readers commit to changing the conversation and embracing a more supportive internal dialogue.
